With the rise of dementia and the number of people living with dementia worldwide currently estimated at 47 million and projected to increase to 75 million by 2030, it’s no surprise to see senior living facilities incorporating memory care centers to their campuses. The number of cases of dementia are estimated to almost triple by 2050.

Dementia is a syndrome, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behavior and ability to perform everyday activities.

You might be saying? So, what?  There are a TON of assisted living options out there!!

Well……. Interestingly enough, In 1984 (yes, you read that right – 1-9-8-4), UMRC opened Wesley Hall, the first residential facility in the U.S. for residents with memory loss. Wesley Hall soon became the benchmark for dementia care across the United States and has evolved into our specialty memory care center, Towsley Village, on the campus of Chelsea Retirement Community in Chelsea, MI.

Here at UMRC, not only are we pioneers of memory care, we continue to invest in our staff and community members by providing preventative, proactive, techniques to support residents’ capabilities and create moments of joy and engagement, ensuring all emotional and physical needs are met and exceeded.

Recently, UMRC offered a seminar through a grant process to caregivers across Southeast Michigan. Needless to say, we sold out almost immediately. BOTH DAYS!  Teepa Snow, MS, OTRL, is a nationally known trainer with her Positive Approach to Care™ model. Teepa helps her care partners to see things from a 360 -degree perspective. Care partners are empowered to use self-reflection and subject matter knowledge for skill building to create better relationships between residents, professional caregivers and family members.

If you have a loved one who is ready for assisted living and is experiencing signs of dementia in any form, UMRC is a great place to stop your search. Just think, we had the forethought to specialize in memory care in 1984, and we’ve had our state-of-the-art memory care center, Towsley Village, offered to our residents for the past 17 years. Our pledge to continue our proactive learning and our compassion to your loved one, is one of our many gifts to our staff, residents, and family members of those suffering from dementia.
