Giving Back to Thome Rivertown Neighborhood

Today, November 27 is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. It’s celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, and this year the UMRC Foundation is focusing on Thome Rivertown Neighborhood in Detroit.
Rivertown is a community offering truly affordable assisted living in a beautiful setting overlooking the city’s Riverfront area. Rivertown welcomed its first resident in February 2013; today, 80 assisted living residents call Rivertown “home.” Ninety-five percent of these residents live well below the poverty level.
Although Rivertown provides outstanding, one-of-a-kind housing, services and programs for low-income seniors, many of their most basic, yet life-changing, needs may still go unmet by Medicaid, from fixing a broken wheelchair to routine vision, dental, hearing, and podiatry care. For others, things like small furniture items, bedding and towels, or other personal care essentials can make a big difference. Basics that most of us take for granted are so greatly needed for each resident’s dignity, overall health, and quality of life, yet may not be covered by any other means.
This is where you can help. Together with you, the UMRC Foundation is creating a Rivertown Assisted Living Resident Services Fund. Your gift to the UMRC Foundation will help provide these much-needed, life changing basics for Rivertown Residents.
